On the thread titled “Is Iron Chef for Real” the OP uses the word oriental to describe the “second rate actresses” that acted as judges in the original series. I twice posted informing the OP that using the word “oriental” in reference to people is seen as a pejorative and twice my post were deleted. I’m curious, what is the chowhound policy on offensive and racist language?

KT, I completely agree that it is not an appropriate term, and I'm glad you spoke up.

KTinNYC, I responded to your post by saying: " No harm intended." Thanked you for it...and that's true.

Please see our policy here (third to the last paragraph) on incidental vulgarity, obscenity, and general offensiveness :

The language isn't just offensive it's racist. I would be willing to bet that if a post contained the word "colored" in reference to people of African heritage it would not past muster. Maybe you can allow gutreaction to edit his post.

As long as words are not used to deliberately offend or attack another poster, we do not remove or edit posts based on a poster's choice of words. We never edit a post without being asked to do so by the poster, but are happy to edit gutreaction's post if he/she would like us to do so.

This is a good healthy discussion, and while I did not mean any harm in my post, I would not mind editing a few words myself...May I?

ah the p.c. world we unfortunately live in nowdays.

I dont know how many times I have seen the word gringo posted on here. Not something I would cry to the mods about.
