The Little Oven- Honolulu (King St.)

By chance, I happened to drive by The Little Oven today... and FINALLY, it was open! I know that it has really limited hours (W-Sat, 6pm-12am and Sundays 10-2pm) and I just never seemed to be in that part of town during those times to check it out. This shop is a couple stores Diamond Head of the Fro-Yo place.

Anyway, I slipped in and briefly looked at the blackboard menu. Aside from the usual things that you find at a cafe-style place (coffee, shakes, gelato, Sunday scones, etc.) there were 2 things on the Ala Cart slections: chocolate swirl cake or the 'meyer lemon ume kanten fruit parfait with mochi drops.' $6.50 for each selection. I saw that one of the aunties delicately eating the chocolate cake and it didn't look too exciting, so I opted for the parfait.

The kanten (Japanese-style jello of sorts) had flecks of ume and lemon zest and were cut out with sakura cutters. The mochi drops were indeed drops (about a teaspoon each) and were mixed in with starfruit, blackberries, blueberries, chopped apples, lychees and canned mandarin oranges. It was a very light, refreshing dessert, but I was wishing for more of the delicious ume-lemon kanten.... because otherwise, it could very much well be just a fancy fruit salad in a cup.

I'd love to check out some more of the stuff on the menu, but will have to make it a point to be in the neighborhood on this 1-way street.
They mentioned that on 28 November, they're going to have a 'Singles Event' and on the 1st weekend of December, they'll be selling the KC Waffle Dogs. To verify and for further info, you should call them up or check out their website:

Definitely an enjoyable space with a nice, intimate interior design. Would make another visit to check out more things on their menu.
