Review of the new Cravings Cafe
Last night I visited the new Cravings Cafe location and thought I would post a review. To begin, we got a bit lost on our way over, as my father in law kept ignoring the GPS and we eventually wound up at the SuperFresh shopping center on Main St. When we called to get directions, we were able to get there in less than 5 minutes.
The new location is HUGE compared to their old space, with probably 100% more tables than they had previously. Unfortunately, it is no longer a BYOB on the weekends, but my more knowledgeable than me mother in law reviewed the wine list and pronounced it "decent." She had a cosmopolitan from the bar and enjoyed it.
The menu had about 4 appetizer and entree specials listed, all of which seemed seasonally appropriate. I was disappointed to see that they no longer offer the bruschetta trio, which was one of my favorites from them. We skipped appetizers and went right to our meals - my husband & mother in law ordered the horseradish and potato crusted tuna, my father in law ordered the seared shrimp & scallops, and I ordered one of the specials, Surf & Turf - a 6 oz. NY strip steak and a crab meat stuffed lobster tail. I was told that the Surf & Turf had just sold out, 10 minutes prior (it was 7:15), so I ordered the short rib & prawns plate instead.
The tuna and short rib plates came with a choice of side (mixed greens, Caesar, steamed asparagus, or broccoli), and we all got mixed green salads. The aged balsamic dressing was nice, and I loved the coarse grain honey dijon. The Fat Free Toasted Sesame Vinaigrette was a disappointment - it tasted like marinade, not a salad dressing. The rolls offered were nice and warm, with a delicious sun dried tomato & garlic butter, as well as an orange chardonnay butter that my mother in law loved.
After our salad plates were cleared, we waited 30 minutes+ to get our entrees. No check in from the waiter, no water refill, etc. After we were finally served, the waiter swung by to mention that the short ribs "take a really long time." Would have be nice to know that while we were waiting!
The tuna dish was wonderful - the crust was perfect and the bean and rice ragout it was served on was delicious. The scallops and shrimp were served on dollops of purple Peruvian mashed potatoes and it looked lovely - but my father in law isn't a sharer, so I didn't get a taste. The short rib was delicious - the Cabernet glaze was nice. It was also served on the purple potatoes - they look pretty enough. Unfortunately, "prawn" was an overstatement. The two shrimp they served were a medium size and significant toughness, not to my liking at all. All in all, my dish was pretty good.
I would have liked dessert, but my husband's family are health conscious and I didn't even get to look at the menu. Boo on that.
In summary, everyone else cleaned their plates and loved every bite, so I think that we will be back to Cravings. Would love to hear if anyone else has been/thoughts, etc.
