New Prospect Cafe - RIP?

Stopped next to a couple who had come for brunch this afternoon. Grates down; what appeared to be ceiling tiles stacked on the tables and various other kinds of construction debris on the floor. Menus still taped to the window but no other notice. Anyone know any more? Sad to see it go if only for sentimental reasons, since for so long it was one of the few decent and reliable spots in the neighborhood. But this was a while ago...

the joint should have shut down years ago, uninspired chow served in drab surroundings. maybe it was decent 20 years ago but i can confirm it hasnt been any good since the early 90's. i was waiting for a visit from gordon ramsey but i guess its too late. hopefully something decent will open in its place.

Too bad! We have eaten there occasionally over the past year (since we moved close by) and found it to be reliably decent, affordable, and the people nice. I hate to see the old hippy dippy places go. It will probably be replaced by a bank or a realtor, after all.

Hmm. Isn't it in between a bank and a realtor?

I hardly ever saw anyone in there. I was always curious to see if it was any good, considering it seemed to be a step up from standard diner fare, but I never tried it out.

when it first opened more than 20 years ago it was very good in a artsy hippy dippy way ( home baked whole grain breads, always a veg dish, very good salads etc) and a cross section of the nabe's gentrifying populations could be seen. Its been many years since the original owners decamped and my sense it has declined steadily over the years in the face of much improved competition where onece it was the only day in town.
