I'm determined not to drop $1700 on the Design Within Reach Quovis, but all the stainless steel 40" height (need standing height) tables I can find have bottom shelves, which would make pulling a chair in difficult. There's the John Boos Cucina Classico, but not sure it'll be sleek looking enough to work with my modern (series 7 knockoff) bar stools up to. I also really dig the DWR version's casters...

Does anyone know of a company that'll do custom for cheap that they know and trust? Located in LA is preferable, but willing to ship (as long as it's not prohibitively expensive.)

I think you'll find that the bottom shelf is needed for leg support unless you go with something like the first table listed here: http://www.stainlesssteelstore.com/stainless-steel-tables-sstop.html

I just realized that's the exact table you mentioned - duh - the other suggestion would be to have a cabinet shop make a top for you, perhaps thin stainless over plywood (less expensive) with a nice edge, and buy two table bases (pedestal) to attach to the top. You could try any local kitchen cabinet shop and ask if they've worked with stainless.
