Would appreicate some suggestions of a nice place for a drink before going to see a show at Second City.

There are a lot of bars close by:

    - Corcoran's - right across the street. Good pub, but it gets crowded on weekend evenings, and it can be difficult to find a table.
    - Wells on Wells - another straightforward pub next door to Corcoran's. Generally a little less crowded than Corcoran's, but it's often still hard to get a table on weekends.
    - Adobo Grill - this is a Mexican restaurant with a bar area, but their drinks are great. next door to Second City.
    - Old Town Ale House - This place has the most character of the places I've listed. Less yuppy vibe than the other places listed. It's a block away from SC.

I agree with the Corcoran's, Wells on Wells, and Old Towne Ale House recommendations but I think it's important to clarify that they are definitely on the
"Divey" side. I pick Corcorans over the three.

The poster requested "nice place" so I suggest the bar at Orso's 1401 N. Wells or Topo Gigio 1516 N. Wells

O'Brien's is a nice place on Wells just south of North.

I wondered about that particular spot but didn't know whether they had a bar or if it was just the restaurant. Some restaurants have very little if any bar space.

The food and service is terrible at O'Briens. You're better off at Orso's or Toppo Giggio's bar, or even Corcorans or The Fireplace Inn.
