From what I’ve read, the cake tastes as good as it looks. If that is true, that would be something. Obviously these are special event cakes. However, they are prettier and more creative than any I’ve ever seen. I was picking up my $3 slice from Golden Boy and $5 fish & chips when the sign caught my eye. Since there was no time to stop and check it out, I Googled to check it out. Shinmin Li, the owner, has professional training in both graphic design and baking. The results look stunning. One site said she has been baking cakes for 'San Francisco's elite' for years. Her shop in North Beach opened late last year. I was hoping it was only the custom cakes that started at $350 because the pea in the pod or the stork cake would have been perfect for an upcoming baby shower. No such luck. Starting price, period, is $350. This particular relative isn’t THAT special to me. However, there are going to be events when this place will seriously be in the running. It is a plan ahead type of place. They are currently booked through August. They do the cutest shoe cakes. They said that these are actual shoe size and paired with other cakes like the purses. The link to the site below shows one of the purses. Yes that IS a cake. Also check out the Miss Piggy complete with spun sugar boa on the children’s cake section. One of the greatest anniversary cakes I’ve ever seen is the Homer and Marge Simpson in a bathtub cake (the last cake in the thumbnails of the ‘new creations’ section. Obviously they make wedding cakes too. Oddly, it never occurred to me before to go to a wedding cake bakery for a special occasion cake. However, beautiful, but not quite as elegant or detailed as I Dream of Cake. I am going to have to walk by that shop next time I’m in North Beach to see these cakes in person.
