No one responded to the request a month ago for info on this restaurant, so I thought a short review was in order. The two of us went early yesterday evening around 6 PM. It was our first visit. The restaurant is narrow and the front table space which is adjacent to the bar is not very inviting (especially when the tables empty at that early hour), but the back space was nice. There seems to be a small garden that should be pleasant in warmer weather (the back wall is all glass and looks out on it). Brick walls and polished wood but not very noisy. Perhaps it was the hour, perhaps luck of the draw, but there were a surprising number of young children at about half the occupied tables. You wouldn't think this was a child friendly place. All well behaved though. While the place was not packed when we left about 7:15, it looked like they were doing all right.
The service was very helpful and enthusiastic. There seemed to be enough staff to handle busier times. The customary Korean amuse bouche (forgot the Korean word) consisted of spiced string beans, black beans and kimchi. Very nice. We split a kimchi/tofu/pork appetizer which was slightly mild for us, but otherwise well spiced and tasty. The tofu was soft and creamy. We had the duck and the black cod as entrées which were wonderful and quite decent sized portions. They were both nicely sauced. The cod came with super-thin fried sweet potatoes.
We skipped dessert and coffee/tea. We had one beer each (one Korean, one stout from the Chelsea Brewing Company). The entire damage with tax and tip was under $75 for two. We will certainly return.
Thanks for the review, bob. I also think this place is an interesting additon to the neighborhood. We went later than you (8:00ish) when it was very busy, but the service was still fine. I liked the fried dumplings with kimchi/pork/tofu more than you did, especially with the dipping sauce. The scallion pancake was also really good -- lots of scallions, some seafood, not greasy at all. I went with a relative visting from out of town (who never had Korean food before), so we ordered somewhat conservatively, but next time I'll order soemthing more adventurous!
