Any suggestions on what kind of apples are best for cobbler and for apple butter in the crock? Should I just use a variety of differernt types? Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you make the apple butter in a crock pot? Did you can it or just put it into plastic containers? We've never done this before and I'm assigning this task to my husband on Wednesday. Would love to give some to our girls to take back to college. Thanks for you suggestions.

I made apple butter last month with some of every kind of apple the orchard would let me pick. Maybe 8-10 kinds? Hampshire, Northern Spy, Red and Golden Delicious, Macoun, Cortland.... It was the best apple butter I've ever made, and I'm almost halfway through (very sad).

For cobblers and pies, like Macca said, you probably want to use at least half of it with a tart apple like Granny Smith, or golden delicious. You also want to add some sweeter apples like Macs (fujis are great and really sweet). I've never made apple butter but if it is similar in making like apple sauce, I would also recommend using granny smiths and fujis.

Never made apple butter- but for cobblers and pies I like to use a mix of granny smith and either Macs or braeburn (sp?)
