Tonali Update (Durham, NC)

dschoonmaker Nov 15, 2007 11:38 AM

I happened to be in Durham on Shannon Road at lunch time yesterday, and my car just couldn't help but turn into the Tonali parking lot.

Much to my joy, mussels have returned to the lunch menu for otono, although the preparation is different from the previous rendition. They're now a part of a stew that includes chorizo, zucchini, potato, avocado, onions, fresh cilantro and fair bit of zip. It was absolutely divine! I wanted to lick the bowl. The mussels were also the best I've ever eaten, and I've had my share. I've never seen mussels that occupy such a large portion of their shells.

The other thing that I'm delighted to report is that by the time I left at around 12:30, there were only a couple of unoccupied tables. I talked briefly to Andre, and he said that business is slowly but steadily improving. Very good news.

Great news - I love that place and would HATE to see it close.

I was there about 6 weeks ago and had the cream of pumpkin soup - excellent - creamy with very subtle flavors, topped by a little lightly smoked salmon. I also had their Huachinango Veracruzano (Red Snapper Veracruz Style) - was different than I've had in Mexico - but I'm sure each place has their own style with this. The topping was a fresh, uncooked version accompanied by lettuce - also excellent.
