I bought this bottle of something called "Spanish Oil" which has olive oil and olive pomace oil listed as the ingredients. Is this some low grade stuff or the oil with the *bad* cholesterol or something? What is olive pomace oil?

It tastes pretty good, whatever it is.

"Pomace is the ground flesh and pits after pressing. Olive-pomace oil is the oil obtained by treating olive pomace with solvents or other physical treatments....."
"In no case shall this blend be called "olive oil". It is considered an inferior grade and is used for soap making or industrial purposes"

FWIW, the chemical generally used in the production of pomace oil is hexane. The oil has a rather high smoke point and a neutral flavor so it is used in some commercial kitchens as a cheap sauteeing oil.

Pomace oil - presumably the "refined" version a bit further down the page from hannaone's quote - is certainly used where cost is a bigger factor than esthetic idealism is. It's generic tasting, but should be quite a lot cheaper than virgin or EVOO.
