Vienna Dining Post Opera
I'm heading to Vienna for the first time. I'm taking in a performance at the Staatsoper and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions in the area around the opera house where I can have a nice meal after the opera.
I have a reserve at Korso, but a search through the boards seems to indicate that its no longer worth the price, especially considering the dollar/euro exchange rate. There seem to be some interesting options in the postings, but I've called a couple and the kitchens don't stay open late. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Yes, Korso has been downgraded again in the new Gault Millau 2008, but some people say that now is the best time to test it again, they will try harder...
The next place definitely recommended is the Le Ciel restaurant, just one block from the opera in the top floor of the Grand Hotel:
Le Ciel was just awarded the third toque by Gault Millau ...
And YES, they offer an "after opera" dinner !!
My husband and I just did this in November. We took in Arabella at the Staatsoper then headed over to Le Ciel for a late supper. While it was certainly good, I have to say this was my least favorite meal in Vienna (a super Chow town). We had been blown away by the tasting menu at Meinl am Graben the night before, so I think Le Ciel suffered a little in comparison. Which is absolutely not to say it wasn't good--the ingredients were top-notch and the cooking was tres correct--just that the flavors weren't as interesting, I suppose...I guess I thought it was a little too expensive for what it was. Also fyi it was a sort of weird atmosphere in the restaurant that late - only four tables occupied, a man playing pop songs alternating with Chopin at the piano, and super super formal kind of stilted service.
Selfishly I hope you will try Korso, NowVoyager1, and report back so I know what to do the next time I go! Have a wonderful trip.
PS Sturmi thank you so much for all your Vienna posts--they were an incredible help to us for our visit.
re: H. LaRonita
It is my pleasure if you could use my posts.
And I agree with you about Le Ciel.
Still, Korso might be worth a try, but I would not expect too much.
In my experience at Korso the food is also quite good but overpriced, and the service is wanting. There is now a kind of pro-Korso PR campaign by friendly gourmet writers, but this does not count unless all customers are reporting a return of their former excellence ...
Try to get an after-opera reservation at Palais Coburg !!
