restaurant for my grandmother
Does anyone have suggestions for a place to take my southern grandmother for dinner when she comes to visit in January? She likes Italian food, and will feel uncomfortable if we take her somewhere that is too white-tablecloth fancy. Expensive is okay, but it needs to be comfortable, not stuffy. Opportunities for people-watching are also wonderful.
Thanks for the help!

Crispo should be just perfect. Not stuffy, people watching, and best of all, fine Italian dishes.

i Trulli on 27th St is nice. They have white tablecloths, but it's a very comfortable room and they are extremely warm and friendly.

Those are a little too casual. I'd kind of like something prettier. But those look like good places for me to go for a cheap dinner.

How about Giorgio's of Gramercy on 21st Street? I find this little gem to be a very "civilized" place for adults especially when dining with older people as it is not too noisy and you can easily conduct a relaxed conversation. It is casual and the service is quite good. Food is quite delicious - nothing too fancy and certainly solid and satisfying with all the fuss. I think your grandmother will enjoy it!

I've never been to Giorgio's on Gramercy, but it is on my list because friends of mine have also said it is terrific.
For grandma, I like Peasant because it is warm and rustic and has good food. Po is a little smaller, but she might enjoy that too. Both places are a bit different than what you would find at home but pleasant and comfortable at the same time.

Another vote for Giorgio's. I believe they have a prix fixe, so it can get crowded. Food, service, value were all very good. The bar area is nice too. Best of all you can enjoy conversation with your dining companions. I've been trying to think of a place for this evening and Giorgio's might be perfect.

haven't been to Geogio's but i Trulli (even though it's not my favorite Italian restaurant) is a great choice for a grandmother...reserve a seat near the fireplace to make it extra comfortable.

Fireplace is good. It'll be January, after all.

Giovanni Venti Cinque is a small, charming walk-down, non-pretentious Italian restaurant plucked right out of Verona, just 1 block or so from the Met Museum.

Supper is really good and not fancy, but not cheap. Da Andrea is also really good and more neighborhood like. I am also a big fan of Piccolo. Oh, and of course, LUPA!
