Near UF Campus
My family is going to the UF-FSU game in a couple of weeks. I haven't been on campus in 7 years and I was wondering what suggestions people had for a pre-game lunch on or near University Ave. I like Burrito Bros, but we'd prefer table service. The only restriction is that it must be walking distance from the stadium and isn't sushi.
Thanks!

sure! cafe gardens across from the post office is great, especially if you sit outside. it's just off university avenue and 17th st. great burgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. the bistro just across 13th st on university is tough to beat, pretty sophisticated stuff. a few outside tables, but they are on the avenue so there is smoke and noise. right next door is leonardo's, you can't get better pizza and their caesar salad is tops. a little further down university avenue is gyros plus; run be a lebanese family, it has top drawer middle eastern food. the hummous and tabouleh can't be beat, in fact it's all good. no atmosphere, a few outside tables, but friendly people and terrific food. enjoy!

good suggestions here, especially burrito bros and cafe gardens. right around the corner on 1st avenue next to st. augustine's is a new place - good salads and sandwiches. used to be bagelland but was bought out. east on university is gyro plus, fabulous middle eastern food, place run by lebanese immigrants. very authentic, very delicious. enjoy! richard

I second Cafe Gardens....yes, they do have the awesome sweet potato fries with dill sauce. However, last time I was there on a game day (last october) they had a limited menu, not their usual full menu. The sweet potato fries were still available, as well as burgers and chicken sandwiches and stuff like that.

I've always liked Cafe Gardens, just across from campus off University Drive -- casual, bur a good college atmosphere. Mostly casual foods, but you probably don't want fine dining before a football game.
Beware -- get there early (real early) or be prepared to skip eating -- every place withing walking distance is going to be packed. It's a 5:00 PM game (unless that changes for TV) so plan on lunch.

re: floridan
Wise advice. I was just in Gainesville this past weekend, and right over by the stadium you have Cafe Gardens, the Copper Monkey, and the Swamp. Alan's Cubana Salty Dog Saloon served decent food too, if I remember correctly, but it was small, dark, and perhaps smoky (being a bar first and foremost and a restaurant second). Don't even try going to any of them as game time gets closer! It just isn't going to happen.
Also, the old Burrito Brothers building is GONE. Bulldozed, demolished, GONE, along with the old two-story shopping center where Eckerd Drugstore used to be, across 13th Street from the McDonald's. I believe Burrito Brothers may have moved a few buildings to the west, perhaps even sharing space with Apartment Hunters or Target Copy.
