Thanksgiving Turkey

doughgirl154 Nov 13, 2007 07:35 AM

Hello! I just moved to Boston and am preparing a small Thanksgiving Dinner (for 2). I live in Beacon Hill, any suggestions on where to get a small (uncooked) bird? I'd like a real turkey, not just a boneless breast, if that's even possible?? Thanks!!

The Whole Foods on Cambridge St should be close to you (I put an order in there yesterday). I'm sure you could get something at Savenors as well.

I did an early Thanksgiving on Sunday with a turkey I got from Mayflower Poultry in Cambridge. The turkey was pretty tasty and was only $1.99/lb. The guys who work there were also very pleasant and helpful (he called on Friday to tell me the final weight of the bird...20.29 lbs).

Are you looking for a farm fresh bird, or just any old small whole bird? If you are interested in a farm bird, there are a few nice poultry farms not that far out of the city where you can order a nice fresh bird. I've had great birds in the past from Owen's Poultry Farm in Needham:

Give Russo's in Watertown, they have the little birds sometimes!

In town, best options are Savenor's or Whole Foods. I also like to order a fresh killed from Sulmona in the North End. Savenor's and Sulmona are taking orders now..for pickup next week.

We used Sulmona last year and were very happy..just ordered a 10 lber for this year. Sav's is quite a bit more pricey and I'm not convinced it's much better.
