Melanzane alla parmigiana

On my most recent trip to Montreal in early October I tried Pizza Villa (Papineau/St-Zotique) because 'Cheap Thrills Montreal' said they make a great eggplant parmesan. It was a pleasant little restaurant but the eggplant just sucked! I was really disappointed. So, my question is this ... where in Montreal can you get really good 'melanzane alla parmigiana'. I really enjoy Italian 'comfort food' (a first-rate lasagna will keep me coming back regularly) and an old-fashioned, family-owned neighborhood restaurant (nothing fancy or pretentious) where they take pride in what they serve. Where can I find this in Montreal?

  1. I am from the south west area of Montreal. There are two favs in my book:

In Verdun there is Cucina Linda: (no website) Located at the corner of Hickson and Wellington. Family owned, food is very good and very reasonably priced, however the only downside is that the patrons usually seem to be 85% 80+ in age, and that can make for a different sort of ambiance.

In Lasalle there is La Campagnola: http://www.lacampagnola.ca/ Very different atmosphere, loud and bustling. Also family owned. Usually one of the brothers will be sitting at a table talking with the diners. It is bring your own wine. I love the food.

As for Camp's, Dino and Joe are great guys serving great food.

Strangely enough, just down Dollard St. a little further south is a bakery (in the strip mall just past the fire station) that makes eggplant parmesan to order and even my Italian landlords buy from them. REALLY good. Order in advance.

    2. My favorite for eggplant is Pasta Cassareccia on Sherbrooke St. West near Melrose. But they only have it on the menu in late summer, early fall. I have served it at a dinner party and everyone loved it.
