i recently ate at sushi to die for in downtown san rafael and though it was decent. while it wasn't anything special, a few rolls were creative enough to hold my interest. a little fusiony. the roll with jalapenos was very spice.
one place i will not recommend is king of the roll in larkspur. i went there last week to pick up a to-go box of maguro sashimi. it was terrible! the thin strips looked like they had been hacked with a butter knife. though i did get nine strips instead of seven pieces. maybe it's different if you sit down and eat, but that box sure doesn't give me any reason to go try.

Sorry to hear about your King of the Roll experience, as that place is one of my favorites. Decent sized slices of super fresh fish at a reasonable price makes it one of the best Sushi values in the Bay Area, IMO.
The menu and the surroundings arent the most extravagant around, but theyre creative and informal enough for my tastes.

There's a new King of the Roll in "downtown" Terra Linda, next to the Post Office. It's a tiny place, but offers a schizophrenic double menu - half Chinese and half Japanese. I had tempura which was just OK.

I find Akira on Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael pretty reliable. My personal favorite, the namesake Akira Roll, is outstanding. It's a small place with reasonable prices. I've never had to wait long for a table/seat.

Sushi to Dai For in San Rafael is fine. I also like Taki in Novato.

Have you tried Robata or Samauri, both in Mill Valley?

I like both of them very much. The friendly atmosphere in both makes them good places to get together with pals.

Sushi Ko, in Larkspur Landing Center.

I agree, sushi ko is one of my favorites anywhere. It's not flashy like sushi ran, but it's friendly and the fish couldn't be fresher.

I've visited all of the sushi bars listed so far and none of them comes close to Sushi Ran (which I know is off your list of possibilities)

To me Akira is the best Sushi in central Marin.
I've been to them all: Sushi to Dai For (good, but overrated for its "party" scene), King of the Roll, Kamikaze, Sushi Ko, Samurai, Robata, etc. Sushi Ran is great for fresh fish, presentation, and atmosphere, but you'll pay top dollar for insubstantial aspects in touristy Sausalito.
Akira has the most creative rolls around as well as fish at its freshest. It's much more reasonable and creative than Sushi Ran, and a hell of a lot more flavorful than Dai's place a block down Fourth Street.
The chefs won't serve things out of season, and they're happy to suggest and tailor your dinner to your tastes. Maybe that's one reason why they're expanding and opening a new location in San Anselmo later this year.

I've been to them all too, and Akira is my favorite. Same feeling as others about Sushi Ran. If you want very traditional sushi, Sushi Gourmet in Strawberry Village is also good, but not the breadth of style as Akira.

Try the Yu Shang in San Rafael. Was tip-top when Henry was there - still pretty good. Sushi bar and a Chinese restaurant - like the Chinese too. Parking Karma important after Kerner was made one-way.
Where'd Henry go a couple years back?
Hear he's around; forget where. I'd try his current gig just to see....

I know this is an old thread but.... Yu Shang really was the best around.. when Henry was there. I lived in that area for 7 yrs and once I was inroduced to them - really HIM - we went there once a month plus special celebrations like birthdays. I've never found anyone I loved as much and he was not just our chef but a dear and treasured friend that I miss tremendously to this day. He went to a place in Petaluma I think it was, and we found him there... but then after that, gone again. I'd like to know where he went too if u ever found out. Last time I went to Yu Shang it was still very good.. just not the same with him gone though. Second to that, King of the Roll was better than most others right in that area. I wonder if they still are, it's been so long... or if they are even still there.

Has anyone else tried Sushi Lin, on 3rd st. near Lincoln in San Rafael, yet? The chef was at Sushi Ran. The hot food was okay, but the sushi was fresh and pretty creative.

I tried Sushi Lin the other day, and it was great. Up to the standards of Taki in Novato and Sushi Ran.
