It doesn't really go bad unless it gets buggy, but it does gradually lose potency. Sniff to see if it still smells good; you might have to add a little more than if it were fresh to get the right taste. I know that many experts advise throwing out all your spices once a year and replacing them with fresh ones, but that's not really necessary. On the other hand, those 38-year old herbs and spices we found when we emptied my mother's house after she died were discarded without compunction.
