Does it go bad? What's its shelf-life?

  1. It doesn't really go bad unless it gets buggy, but it does gradually lose potency. Sniff to see if it still smells good; you might have to add a little more than if it were fresh to get the right taste. I know that many experts advise throwing out all your spices once a year and replacing them with fresh ones, but that's not really necessary. On the other hand, those 38-year old herbs and spices we found when we emptied my mother's house after she died were discarded without compunction.

    1. Whole nutmeg should last for years. Just don't grate it until you're ready to use it.
