Searching for Chinese Chives

teaspoon Nov 12, 2007 09:53 AM

Hi - does anyone know of a market or grocery store that sells Chinese chives (also known as garlic chives, I think) in the Downtown - Carroll Gardens vicinity? I am actually not entirely sure what the chives look like so I will be at a bit of a loss unless they are clearly labeled on the shelf! Thanks very much for any suggestions.

Here's plenty of pictrures. They're "jiu cai" in Mandarin, but in a Cantonese market ask for "Gow Choy" and they will understand you.

Hi teaspoon. I'm almost positive that I've seen garlic chives at the Sunday farmer's market on Carroll Street. However, I have no idea if that's still going on, it being cold now.
They definitely have them at all of the veggie stands in Chinatown on 8th Ave (Brooklyn).

at the carroll gardens farmer's market the first (or last) stall closest to smith street has something they call garlic scapes which look like the pics of garlic chives linked to below. they had them yesterday, and they probably should have them next week, which would be the last week for that market before it closes for the winter.
if you know you want them ahead of time, you could try asking at the new veggie market on court street (btw degraw and douglas) and seeing if they would get them for you.
