Hi there!

I'm making one of my favorite recipes tonight for Shrimp & Grits, and I just realized that I am completely out of the secret ingredient: Chachere's.

Can anyone tell me where to find it? I know I've seen it in a store around here somewhere, but I also know that I've tried finding it before and have failed.

I'd also be interested in hearing about a substitute for it (another good cajun seasoning) if you can tell me where to find it in the City.

Thank you!!!!

By the lack of response to this post, I'm guessing one of two things: 1) no one knows what Tony Chachere's is or 2) no one knows where to find it in Manhattan.

I stopped by Wild Edibles to pick up my shrimp only to rant at the poor guy behind the counter about the lack of Chachere's in D'Agostino, Food Emporium, and Gristedes (all poor excuses for grocery stores in the first place). He surmises that you can't get it in the city.

I'm going home to Alabama for Thanksgiving and will be bringing plenty of this stuff back, but just in case anyone ever needs a substitute here's what I used:

- 4 parts salt
- 3 parts red pepper
- 1 part cayenne
- 1/2 part garlic salt

I just kept adding salt until it tasted right. It certainly fit the bill, and my Shrimp & Grits were fantastic.

I've found Chachere's in Food Emporium before and in some Stop & Shops. Have you tried the Paul Prudhomme spice blends? Those are pretty easy to find, too.
