Can you recommend a couple of places in this area where we could grab a sandwich, croissant, good cafe on the fly? Thanks to all of you for the good and useful infos you provide.

Marche Madison on 58th just east of Madison has excellent sandwiches etc...not chic but a few chairs & tables for a quick but high quality lunch/snack...

    Also Barney's & Bergdorf's have attractive cafes...

The Four Seasons Hotel on 57th & Park has a pleasant lobby cafe..

Nicole Farhi on 60th between Fifth & Madison has a very attractive cafe located downstairs...

Mangia would fit the bill well. It's on 57th bet. 5th and 6th...good enough baked goods, salads, sandwiches.

Well... Barney's in our list, so we might sample their café. There is so much to chose from, in NY... So many good things to eat, to look at, to do. What a great city. We love it. Thanks!

Fred's at Barneys is fabulous - it is certainly a step up from a cafe. If you go reservations at lunch time is recommended (atleast a day in advance). Have fun!

David Burke at Bloomingdale's on 59th Street is a good quick eat-in or take-out spot. The entrance is on 59th Street between Lex-3rd so you don't have to go into the store.
The grilled veg panini is excellent and they have very good soup.
