I have been to all 3 places, and they are all great. Of the three, Carden Street is my favorite.

Carden Street was my local throughout my undergrad years. They really had fantastic food-but that was some time back so I cannot vouch for the food anymore. I wonder if it's still under the same ownership? Can anyone confirm?

yeah same ownership, was there on saturday....
the food is good but not great - they have thai'ish stuff, african, indian - if it was here everyone would be squawking for them to make up their minds i bet.
With the grain is just a bakery, albiet a good one.
Cornerstone is super artsy, food is nothing special, beer on tap is good though.
There is a place below the bookshelf that is supposed to be very good - as is Bin 23.
My friend has a great pub called NV lounge downtown. They only do apps but their food is quite excellent, fresh and homemade.

I would agree that Carden Street is good for a college town, but would not standout in a large city. The place below the Bookshelf is Artisinale. I'm really pulling for them to succeed, but the few times I have been there I have not been impressed. It had been awhile though, so maybe they have improved.

I had dinner at Artisinale last month. The place is really nice inside but the food is awful I had the steak with fries, Steak was tough and thin and i only got a few fries on the plate no veggies no sauce no presentation! The dessert wasn't much better i had a piece of cake on a bare plate again no presentation. It's tobad i found the service to be good and the place wasn't that busy and it was a friday night also some of the tables are way to close together.
I have always had great meals at bin 23 bin23.ca and Other Brother’s.

i passed by and saw the menu of nv over the weekend and it left me skeptical.
spanakopita, samosas, calamari, spring rolls, etc all on one menu make me wonder if they could really do it fresh and homemade without compromising on the ethinic flavours.
the goat roti i had at the new carribean place was excellent.
atmosphere cafe certainly gets some drools and praises from a friend of mine at guelph.

so many people love carden, but the first and only time i was there, i actually really disliked the food... i could've cooked something better. thankfully the meal was free, but i was just unimpressed with the mish mash of dishes.
recently went to atmosphere cafe, which i loooved. great pate, house smoked trout (but a small portion), and the lamb shank was really really good.

We were in Guelph for the Jazz Festival in September, and we had:
Dinner at Bin 23 -- quite nice, but not a life changer.
Beer and then breakfast at the Cornerstone (we did leave in between) -- great microbrew beer, good cheese on bagel breakfast
Brunch at Diana Downtown -- A pretty room, with Indian and N American choices on the menu; we both had the thali and it was quite good.
