New Burrito Place in London

Hi, if you are like me and have been trying to find really good Mexican in know how frustrating it has been.

I was in Islington last week and came across a new Mexican food place called Tortilla. They have those big burritos like you get in the US and everything was really fresh / tasty.

It is just near Angel tube.... their website is

  1. Do they have proper huaraches and tacos with good fillings like tongue, ear, tripe?

I think this is more Cal-Mex than proper Mexican, still virtually impossible to get the scary, offally stuff here, but take a look at their menu if you're interested:

    2. interesting--are these the burrito wars? Mucho Mas only just opened...

Actually I don't like burritos at all. I like stuff that I get from Mexican street cart ladies.

Tis the burrito wars indeed and Mucho Mas beats Tortilla hands down in the quality of food department!

The food at Mucho Mas simply tastes fresher and the place has a friendlier, funkier vibe compared to Tortilla.

I'd be very interested to know what you think of the food at Tortilla Vs Mucho Mas btw, as I know how much you loved the food at Mucho Mas (I read and love your blog!!).

I thought of you the other day btw, when I was tucking into a Peppered Beef Salad (made with fillet steak cooked rare no less!!) at the Gourmet Burger Kitchen. I remembered how much you miss "dinner salads" here in London and thought you'd probably enjoy the salads at GBK ! ;-D

Having tried both a couple of times, I have to say that I think Tortilla has a superior offering. The tortillas themselves are softer, I like the fact that the grill is in view of the customer, they do black beans AND pinto beans, the meats definitely taste fresher, are warmer, the salsas appear fresh and homemade rather than bought-in, the guacamole to me was a whole lot fresher, there are two types of rice etc etc.

The staff are very friendly and I only had to express a passing interest in their margarita machine to be offered a free sample.

Furthermore, there is a better range of beers and bottomless softdrinks.

The position of Tortillo on an un-lovely stretch of the road near to an amusement arcade is definitely inferior to the raised pavement location of Mucho.

Can it be long before MacD's start opening Chipotles all over London.

Love the burritos at Tortilla, havent been to Mucho Mas.
Food is excellent and warm, and the place is cozy. I have tried just about everything on the menu and my only comment is: stay open late!

          1. I think Tortilla is great. Went this weekend for the first time and really enjoyed the food. I had the tacos with pork - really amazing pork!

I will check out Mucho Mas... I heard it is not bad, but not amazing.

            1. has anyone tried this new wahaca place? i'm dubious (and that wasn't assuaged by a friend who went and said it was great. she's english).
