Pizza at UWS Grandaisy (Sullivan St.) Bakery

do they have it yet? What Toppings? They told me a few weeks ago that it was coming soon....

I'm quivering with anticipation.....

  1. i keep peeking in myself trying to determine whether the shelves have been rearranged to accommodate the pizza. unfortunately, this has always been well after 7pm each night this week. i'll pass by tomorrow during the day. i'm quivering over here as well.

      wasn't there last weekend. they are waiting for their pizza oven to be installed. i was told end of hte month-ish, hopefully.

      in the meantime, the cheesecake is fantastic.

    2. Where is it on the UWS please. I only know of 2 locations, West 47th Street and Sullivan Street. Thanks.

          Thanks, another reason to go to the UWS. I have yet to go to Levain Bakery for their cookies, so maybe now I can do both at the same time.

            AND on Amsterdam, between West 73rd and 74th, is the new Jacques Torres. I was there yesterday -- they were giving out free samples of their wicked hot chocolate.

              ... and they ran out of that hot chocolate (well, actually, they had run out of milk which i nearly offered to buy for them!!) by the time we arrived : ) no s'mores and no chocolate croissants either! they said it had been crazy in there all day. we bought chocolate corn flakes and vowed to come back... maybe even today! what a huge place and the chocolate is really great. they are also super-nice in there! fabulous new addition to our nabe!

                word just in on grandaisy pizza - uws: the ovens supposedly arrive next week STRAIGHT FROM ITALY!! the guy behind the counter told me yesterday.

          Is W47th still associated with Grandaisy? I thought they split, which is why the Sullivan Street location changed their name.

            They did split, but are still on good terms and Grandaisy sells Sullivan Street products.

              this is my understanding as well. they are definitely comparable, having been to both locations after the change.

                What products at Grandaisy are baked/made at Grandaisy and what products were baked/made at Sullivan Street? I thought they were just using the same recipes...

                  I have no inside dope on this, but I believe *all* the Grandaisy breads are made by Sullivan Street and that *all* the pastries sold by Grandaisy are made by Grandaisy. In fact, it was my understanding that that was one of the reasons for the split. Jim wanted to expand the wholesale bread operation and Moncia wanted to expand the retail pastry operation. I may be entirely wrong about that and would be happy to be corrected, but that was my understading after being a loyal customer at each in succession.

                    that would make sense as everything really does taste the same. it goes without saying that i am happy to hear this. it is a logical and wise decision on their part.

                    But I guess Grandaisy makes the pizza bianca on site, since they won't have any until they get their oven.

                    I want some now!

                      i believe each of the 3 locations (including sullivan st bakery on W47) bakes them on site. just recently, i've seen them carrying them right from the back, piping hot, after they promised me another batch was coming out of the oven in a few minutes. try to catch them hot if you haven't. as if they aren't good enough cold, they are to die for when hot!!

                        You are so lucky!!! I've had the potato when it was warm and it was indeed delicious.

                          Went by today.. The oven is installed, they are now looking for inspections.. The crew behind the counter could not say when it would be ready..

            2. I was in this evening and was told that, although they are open on Thanksgiving, they will be closed for the weekend while the pizza ovens are installed!!

              I am so there on Monday.

                so the ovens have arrived?!?! last i heard, the ovens were stuck in customs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

              2. still no pizza but the ovens are in and they've reopened. they couldn't even give me an estimate. so don't run over there unless you call. i'm dying over here.

                1. Non-update. I was in the UWS store last night, and they're still waiting for Con Ed to inspect before they can use the pizza ovens.

                    ugghh....i know. the anticipation is killing me. i've been checking in several times over the past week. i finally broke down and bought the winter special two days ago, which is great by the way. did they say when con ed was expected to show up?

                      No. I'm having a party on Saturday and wanted to serve their pizza. They suggested I get at on Sullivan Street.

                          it is a spin on their usual mozzarella di bufala panino. this one replaces the tomatoes with a great olive tapenade with lemon zest and arugula. it is fantastic.

                    2. Stopped in today for a pugliese. Still saying they're at the mercy of ConEd, but are hopeful for next week. Do you think we Chowhounders, en masse, could have any influence with ConEd? No, I didn't think so. But love the idea of a bunch of UWSiders picketing ConEd to get the Grandaisy ovens inspected.

                        i'll be there!! just tell me the time nor'easter? no problem. let's go!! i returned from a business mtg yesterday and skipped on over there thinking, "ok, they GOTTA HAVE IT by now!!" peaked in (i'm too embarrassed to walk in again at this point) and saw NOTHIN'. [wimper].
