Friday night dinner, north phoenix
I live up near the glendale area, and am looking for good 'date' restraunts to take my wife to. We have found a few places we like, but are always up for trying new stuff. I am looking for something(s) preferably a little ethnic so we can try different styles of food. I'm not opposed to driving a bit to go somewhere really worth the time/travel. Any input would be appreciated as we are still fairly new to the area.
Ooh, have you tried Mi Cocina Mi Pais yet? Not only is the food novel and tasty, the intimacy of the spot adds to the experience. Always get the tamale sampler and the fried plantains.
Across from the ASU West campus is Pho Avina, if you like Vietnamese. They are mostly known for their banh mi and pho, but I like the full menu. It's a dive, sure, but you see a steady stream of couples, families, and workers getting great food at super prices.
Another warm & cozy place for a date is the Jug & Barrel wine shop. Their small plates and desserts are done in-house, by a real chef, and they have live music Saturdays.
Then, there's lots of good stuff in downtown Glendale, but Haus Murphy's really deserves a look. It's German food done really well, with full-up servers in lederhosen and an oompah band on the weekends. Somehow it transcends the gimmick, maybe because everything's so fresh and authentic.
