Osteria Gelsi, on the corner of 9th Av. & 38th St., has lots of interesting salads on the menu. I recently had the pear poached in red wine with arugula, Gorgonzola, bacon, and walnuts in a lemon dressing. Major Yum!!

Edited to add: I just noticed your preference for trendy. Well, Gelsi is not that, but it is very attractive and comfortable.

I love a great salad in a trendy atmosphere. I love Mangia, but there is no place to sit. I never went upstairs....is it nice up there?

hmmm. You might like Whym. I think their salads are the best items on the menu. It's not exactly fine dining, and it's a step up from Mangia but not too far off from the price point.

The restaurant section of Mangia is very nice - they have both a salad bar (it is plentiful but small as compared to the downstairs choices) and a nice menu, with salads and small pizzas.
