Tavern on the Green...

What room would you recommend reserving (the crystal room looks great)? I'd like to try it cus I've heard so much about it. Also, any other great trendy restaurants that I should try?

But, while strolling through the park we have ducked into the patio and had a drink. Other than that dining dollars have endless better ways to be spent then TOTG.

Did anyone recommend Telepan yet? If not, that's my place for UWS.

A friend of mine went to Telepan last week and said it was one of the best meals she'd had in a while, though I personally haven't been yet.

I recommend it whenever it fits the request (and sometimes when it doesn't) because we like it that much. Find a reason to go, you'll be glad you did and all I can say is: Smoked Trout...

Hey Taylor,
When I moved to NYC, I actually thought that TOTG was indeed the best of the best. It has a brilliant PR department and it is widely considered to be among Manhattan's best. Outside of Manhattan that is. : )

The good news is that you've come to the right place for good recs. You can get a list of trendy restaurants in almost any price range with GREAT food as well. Lots of negativity about TOTG. Maybe too many of us have felt ripped off/unsatisfied there. Let us know more about what you like and the reccs will follow.

Would only go to TOTG if my parents were visiting and paying. Wait, don't remind me. Think brain-bleach to get rid of such an experience.

yeah, totg is more or less universally hated by new yorkers... i do like those outdoor hanging lamps though.

Hey there,
if you scan through reviews on the board you'll find that TOTG is generally known for having a pretty space with really really bad food. If some of the dishes are passable, they are definitely not a good value and you can eat a far better meal at any number of NYC places for the same price or less. I would recommend having a drink there though as it can be very pretty.

Can you be more specific about your budget and food preferences? Are you willing to go to any neighborhood or do you want to stay in a certain area? Post back with that info and you'll get tons of responses!

I'd hardly desrcribe it at trendy. It may have been back when the airport was called Idlewild, but it's not much better than banquet food you'd see at a Marriott wedding or barmitzvah.

I agree. Most people only eat at Tavern on the Green because they don't know any better or they gave up in trying to find a better place for a gathering.

I'll be in Manhatten for 4 nights (dinners), staying in the upper west side. Traveling with a taxi is not a problem, and one or two expensive dinners are ok (expense account), with one or two 'trendy' hotspots.

Mermaid Inn just opened...should be GREAT!!
