SF Catering on the Cheap?
Hi Chowhounders! I am getting married next July at the Stern Grove in SF and am trying to figure out how to feed 80 guests for under $4,000. We've received lots of quotes for $8,000-$10,000 which is nearly all the savings we have for the whole wedding! I am ready to give up and order pizza or make it a potluck, but I thought I would check with you kind people first. Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!
re: hi standards
I would love to have tapas, but simple Italian would also work just fine. In general, we dislike a lot of "fancy" foods with complicated sauces and preparation. We would much prefer a simple menu with fresh ingredients that can stand on their own. Thanks for your help and I'm sorry if this sounds a little vague.
So, if my math is right, that'd be about $50/pp?
If you go with appetizers rather than a buffet or sit down meal, this is definitely doable. Stern Grove is beautiful, will the reception be in the Club House?
I had a birthday party there a while back and had a great time.
Anyways, the last time I checked in with him, Will at Leland Tea Company also caters and is dedicated to using quality ingredients and working within your budget. Oh, he's also really nice, has his mom working with him and doesn't just do tea stuff: lelandtea.com

Here's a good, moderately priced caterer:

Maureen Schroder has catered lots of events and meetings for my daughter's high school (Lick-Wilmerding) and for other organizations, as well as private events like bat and bar mitzvahs, weddings, etc. in the Stern Grove area. I was on committees that worked with her and that were pleased with the job she did.
