Pain D'Avignon Bagels

eenie1 Nov 7, 2007 03:35 PM

Hi all: I just called my local Whole Foods to order a dozen and a half of Pain's whole wheat sesame bagels and was told that they burned down this morning after orders went out! I haven't been able to find anything on-line about the fire. Any truth to the rumor?

Oh, that's terrible news -- they worked so hard to start the bakery. I'm glad they'll be back up and running in New York, but that was such an investment of sweat equity on the part of their families.

Zingerman's makes a very good whole wheat bagel and they also have a nine-grain that I think is excellent. You can order on their web site.

I'm hoping they are going to rebuild...quickly!!...but in the mean time can anyone recommend a good, not at all sweet, whole wheat bagel?? Thanks!!

Don't know if they have whole wheat (not a real bagel flavor, but that's another discussion :-), but try Iggy's. They're much closer to Montreal than New York and are, frankly, the only acceptable bagels we've found in Boston.

I hope someone has an answer to this - I have not really been able to find a good whole wheat bagel. My Whole Foods sells whole wheat and whole wheat sesame bagels from Zeppy's, which are decent. I don't think they are 100% whole wheat, if that's what you're looking for. I wish they had a slightly heartier texture and flavor.

Oh no! What terrible news. I love their bread. I usually buy from Whole Foods but really enjoyed visiting their bakery in Hyannis this summer. Best of luck to them.

            Alas, I fear it's true:
