We have a reservation for Proof tomorrow but there are some bad reader reviews coming in on the Post website - is it worth the money? Thanks!

Hmm... Proof is a tricky one! When I was there, no one in my party seemed to be impressed with the food. It was not bad... it just wasn't good. At least, not good enough for the price. On the other hand, if you are looking for a restaurant where they will cater to your wine-obsession, then Proof is it.

I really like it--and have been back several times for anything from cocktails to a full dinner (and some hors d'oevres in between).
My recommendations include Gnocchi, Ravioli with meatballs, and the Sablefish.

I went there last week and it was good and I would go again. However, it's not my first pick, which would be Central, in that price range. I tried a bit of everything my party ordered, so I am comfortable saying that the cooking is actually good versus not bad. Plus, it is definitely a fun spot top try wines. The sommelier is quite helpful.

We shared a 3 cheese plate to start between four people - I can't remember the names of all the cheese - one was by pipe dreams, one was the triple creme at the bottom of the menu, and I think a gouda. I had a full order of the gnocchi with chanterelles, which is very rich. You may want to share. :) I think it was a tad dry, but the mushrooms were so fabulous. The best dish was the sablefish - it's miso glazed. I had a bite of my friend's and it literally melts in your mouth. I began to wish I ordered it and had food envy the rest of the night, so I would go back just for that. Someone else ordered another fish and they really tasted so different, it was really striking. It was also good, but a very firm texture versus soft and completely different tastes. Tried a peice of the steak and that was done well, too.

I hope that helps. If you do keep your reservation, get the sablefish and you won't regret it.

In my opinion, some portions are small for the price, but it is a good experience. The champagne guy (wish I could remember his name) is wonderful. Even for a glass of cheap prosecco, he was charming and engaging and treated us very well.

Sebastian (the sommelier) is a delight, his selection of wines and champagnes is incredible, and the prices are quite reasonable for the product and location.

I haven't explored the dinner menu at all, but the charcuterie, cheeses, and such at the bar have been first rate.

I really liked it when I went a couple of months ago. The gnocchi dish was delicious. And the cheese choices are great...I highly recommend getting a sampling.

Just for the record, I don't really trust the reviews on the Post website unless it comes straight from Tom (or the other Post staff).

Thank you all Hounders! Appreciate your help. We went on Thursday. It was nice but I wouldn't go there to eat again - it seemed like the food was not good enough to justify the expense. But, the wine bar is great and I will go back there for Hapy hour. And Elyssa- I agree with you on the Post reviews - I was just overwhelmed by the shear number of bad ones!
