Was just driving through downtown SF when I spotted a grand opening sign for this place at Battery and Pine.

It struck me as sort of "fast-food" Italian catering to the lunch crowds from passing glance, but I was wondering if anyone had any actual experience eating there.

No knowledge, but...

about 15-20 yrs ago the son of the owners of the famed Vivoli Gelateria in Florence opened a branch here (in the Cannery, I think). It didn't last very long. I don't know what the son did next.

Not sure if it's the same people, but Vivoli's in Berkeley's Trumpet Vine Court was the first gelato place in Berkeley in the late 70's/early 80's. It was always my favorite.

Somebody on Yelp says Cafe Vivoli is a spinoff of Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana in Berkeley.

There was no connection between the Berkeley Vivoli and the original in Florence.

This used to be a salad by the pound place which also served the kind of pizza you would expect. I was really excited to see the new sign. I haven't eaten there since the change, but it appears to be pretty much identical to what it was with the addition of a new station serving pasta. I really hope I'm wrong about this!

I've tried the pasta dishes. They are actually pretty good. They cook it while you wait. Bought the pizza and calzone once too. That was ok but nothing to write home about.

Definitely try the pasta.
