Lunch in San Mateo

My DH works in San Mateo and every time I go out there during the day for lunch we wind up eating crappy food at crappy restaurants, which for some reason is the only type of place his co-workers seem to find (and like... these people have horrible taste in food). Just once I'd love to have some really good food. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, any number of others... but not Indian or Korean or pasta. Would prefer something that isn't going to break the pocketbook, but it doesn't have to be dirt-cheap either.

Any suggestions?

Some places like Oidon, Izakaya Mai, either offer a limited menu or not open for lunch (Mai I think). Sushi Sam's is closed Sundays and Mondays all day.

If you're open to classic American fare, I think Jeffrey's has a pretty great turkey burger going for it.

Lord, there's no reason why you should be eating crappy Japanese food in San Mateo!

Have you guys been down to 3rd and 2nd Ave??? On 3rd, there's Hotaru (@El Camino), Masu (@San Mateo Ave.), Nimo (cheap lunch specials and acceptable bentos, especially for the price). And agreed, Jeffrey's is good for burgers, fries, fish and chips. There's also a new wood fired pizza joint on the corner of 2nd Ave and B St. that I haven't tried yet. There's also a couple of Hawaiian BBQ places and tapioca drink joints.

Go to downtown SM for some decent ethnic food!
