Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of those coated french fries? A really good french fry is getting harder to find.

Are these the different than the crosscut "waffle style" fries Carl's had? I liked those, if they've been replaced by the "natural cut" fries from Hardees that is truly a shame.
Personally, having tried both Carl's (in CA) and Hardees (in FL) I like Carl's a lot more. Their burgers are better, they have more variety, and Carl's stores have Green Burrito which I wish they'd transplant to FL.

Yes they were different. My first job was working at Carl's Jr. They were made from a dehyrdated potato like product called "Frisbo." They were little pepples shapped into crinkle cut fry shapes. I second the Crisperito request. I could attribute half my acne scars to that delightful little fried burrito.

To each his own, but they were not very good. As if french fries aren't already one of the highest profit margin foods that any restaurant serves, this was essentially the, "hot dog," of the potato world. Potato dregs, dehydrated, rehydrated, shaped into the form of a crinkle cut, "fry," and then cooked in hot oil. When they did serve these, and I would up eating there, I would simply opt for anything else or nothing at all. There is no way that they will bring these back as they do not integrate at all with Carl's currently desired image of higher quality, higher priced, old fashioned ("hand cut fries", "hand scooped shakes") fast food. These may be an older product, but they definitely weren't old fashioned, instead a result of cost saving industrial technology and processing gone awry in the '70s and '80s. Exactly what resulted in the current disfavor/distrust of fast food establishments and store bought processed foods in general. There may be some appeal to a few in this product, but it was decidedly low rent, and I do not miss this or foods like this, at all. Of course, I do respect the OP's right to interpret the information his/her palate sends to his/her brain differently than I do. ;)

re: PommeDeGuerre
By "not very good" are you referring to the waffle-style fries? They are very different than "crinkle-cut" fries, which I agree are generally quite bad.
The problem here is that the "natural cut" fries that Carl's took from Hardee's aren't higher quality. They're typical frozen french fries, and they're not very good. They might look a little different than typical frozen fries, but they don't taste like it.

No, I'm referring to the crinkle cut fries that the OP was addressing. Those that they served in the '70s and '80s, and that he/she wants brought back. I'm not debating whether or not you like or dislike their current fry selection, just that Carl's thinks that image-wise it's a bit higher end. Nothing inherently wrong with frozen foods by the way, if done properly. One of the few "natural" ways of preserving something without adding anything.

OP's post was from November 2007, which was I believe before they made the change of around 6 months ago or so to a horribly fake tasting "natural cut" fry or something like that.
I'll take the early 80's fry, or even the ones they had before the recent change (which I really liked), over the new ones.
The new ones are so horrible tasting IMO I just can't go to CJ anymore. Since I don't eat beef, the only sandwich I could get there is their chicken sandwiches. The chicken breasts they serve also seem fake, and are a weird rubbery texture.

Amen. I hate that announcer's voice -- that smarmy, SWM, twenty-something know-it-all, sarcastic-but-not-in-a-good way vibe. "If it doesn't get all over your face..."
I won't eat at Carl's because of those commercials. What a rebel, huh?

Weren't those like the Pringles of french fries? There was something so artificial about them.

I too, was going to mention Del Taco's crinkly style french fries. Not totally the same but enjoyable none the less. Make sure you get them in one of the large drink cup sizes! Yum. BnF approves of Del Taco French fries along with a #9 Double Del Burger Meal! Hey, can you pass me some portion pak serve ketchup packs please? Thank you.

I am so with you on that. They were the best. Pup n Taco (anyone remember that place?) used to serve the same kind of fries.
