Fussy eater, new to the Bay Area

Hey Hounds,

I am moving up to the Bay Area (Penninsula) this week and am looking for restaurant recs. Any style, ethnic type, and price range is welcome (I am totally clueless on the restaurant scene). Here's the tough part, I'm a gluten-intolerant vegetarian. Anybody know of any place I will be able to eat?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Mekong is a good Thai place in the Tenderloin. They are really aware of different eating restrictions, and can make any dish vegetarian - they even omit fish sauce from curries and other dishes. So they are a really good bet. They have good pumpkin curry.

I am assuming that you do not eat any fish, which makes many other Tenderloin Asian places tricky.

    1. I have celiac but am not vegetarian but often eat vegetarian meals. Where on the Peninsula are you?

Cafe Gratitude is almost entirely GF and vegan (raw).

A very good bet is Indian. Annapoorna in San Mateo gets good reviews. Amber India, Bombay Garden does a large buffet with a lot of vegetarian options.

We also eat a lot of Mexican food, but truly vegetarian is tricky because of lard. I do know however, that Primavera at the Ferry Building Farmer's market and widely distributed in grocery stores makes some good truly vegetarian and gluten free items.

I may be able to give you more options if I knew where you were hoping to eat, but really it isn't hard to eat gluten-free here, nor vegetarian. For many restaurants, especially higher end, just call ahead and ask if they can accomodate you. Most will.

      1. I am looking for restaurants on the Penninsula - ideally between Menlo Park and Campbell. Have you had any luck since you moved here?
