Take Out Sushi - Ave + 401

abscissa Nov 6, 2007 05:31 AM

I am looking for some take out sushi in North York, closer to Avenue + 401 the better.

I am looking for something of GOOD VALUE.. just want to be filled up with rice and soya sauce today :) Does not have to be fish flown in from Japan this morning.

I'll probably only get rolls, so the more interesting the better.

Thanks everyone

Issmi - 1984 Avenue Rd, south of 401 @ Dunblaine

Ichiban - on Spring Garden (Yonge/Sheppard)

Thanks for the help, but I've tried Issimi and it's probably the worst value in the entire city. However I will try Ichiban.

Agree on Issmi-trySushi Days-1/2 block north of the LCBO-(416)783-8877. Good sushi, great value...have been going/pick up about 1/week for about 5 years.

Yup, I've done sushi days and of the three sushi places on Ave. before Lawrence, it's the best for value. Maybe that's why it's busier than the others. Dr. Sushi used to be awesome until the new guy took over. (Maybe 3-4 years now?) I think it's now called "Alex Sushi"

You can also of course get sushi at Pusateri's -- why people buy Sushi from grocery stores is a mystery to me since you can get it fresher at half the price from a sushi place...

How about Kokame, on Wilson just west of Bathurst? It's been about 5 years since my last visit, but I definitely remember the quality being superior to Sushi Days.

Good idea, I will go there today, for some reason I have always avoided it but I should give it a shot.

UGH, just had some take out sushi tonight from Kokame. DISASTER. Rice was super-duper sweet and wet and the fish looked like it came from a blender. It was like eating a children's breakfast cereal with fish. I also hate places that give you half salmon when you order "assorted!!" But there is absolutely no excuse for mediocre rice. My advice: avoid this place unless your rice tolerance is high and you like california rolls. Their fish display is mostly artificial "crab" anyway.

Ayyyeee! So sorry to steer you there! I used to order the sushi boats back in the day, but this was long before I aquired a foodie palate. I guess it could also be new owners/chefs as well. The last time I was at Sushi Days, both the salmon and tuna tasted like fridge. Maybe Spring Garden?

Don't worry! At least it was something new! I would have tried it anyway. It could have easily gone the other way! Look, nobody is saying that Sushi Days is THE place that everyone in the city most go to NOW. But if you want to eat take out on the cheap, eat rolls, then Sushi Days isn't that bad. Would I tell you to go there for the freshness of the fish?? No. But if you order a 12 piece combo, you will get 12 different pieces and the rice won't taste like it was cooked in corn syrup. And it will be $14. There are times you want to eat sushi, and there are times you want to spend very little money :)
