I'm guessing you're thinking of Caffe Italia. Very good old school Italian/Italian-American, with a really nice caffe as well.

Could it be Rino's Place http://www.rinosplace.com/

caffe italia and rino's place are both great little old scool italian restaurants in eastie...if you want a quick bit during the day, meridian market (proscuitto and mozzarella sub), and milano's (chix, broc, ziti, and ravioli) and great bets.

Could also be Jeveli's in Day Square, though I think Rino's and Caffe Italia are both better...

            What about Carmine's?

You mean Carmen's (Kitchen)? I guess it could be any one of these places. There's a great East Boston chow discussion in a previous topic, it might be there if it's not here.

Maybe it's Zafferanos, though I hear they've closed. Can anyone verify that?

Zafferano's (RIP) was great but not old school. I just ate at Jeveli's Sunday afternoon and it was old school but decidedly not great.

Is Mario's still open? I went there a few years ago and had a so-so meal. Definitely old-school, though!
