Went to Suibi on East 53rd(btw 2nd and 3rd) this weekend. They specialize in Okinawan food, and having lived there as a teacher for three years and having an Okinawan wife, I held out on eating there figuring it could never live up to the real thing. I was finally dragged there by a friend and the ood is pretty darned authentic. The owner and the cook are Okinawan and very nice guys. This is THE ONLY place in all of NYC with Okinawan grub, try the Okinawan soba and a pork dish called rafute. You can read threads all day on Le Bernadin and Gramercy Tavern and the food is great of course, but step out for some true novelty and try out Suibi. If you have no plans for the next day, sample awamori, or Okinawan sake.
