Cheeseboard Anniversary today...

Anyone know what's going on? What have they done in previous years? Is it worth going to?

  1. Weird. They're having their anniversary on the day they're closed?

Yes! I thought the same thing. I didn't end up going due to a migraine headache, but its advertised on their website.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post until after 8pm yesterday or I would have headed up there to see what was cooking. Have you been to their newly expanded pizza space yet? I went in for the first time since the expansion last week sometime and it's fabulously well done. I was one of the last customers of the day so I had a chance to chat with a couple of the pizza guys and they were positively *giddy* about it. Pointing out all sorts of things -- "Look! Over the ovens. Exhaust vents! Do you have any idea how much nicer it is to work in here now?!?"

Maybe as an anniversary present we should all chip in and buy them a nice big barrel of tomato sauce ... :)

    2. Did anyone check this out??? I'm still curious as to what they had going on. May check it out next year if someone lets me know that it was worthwhile.

There wont be a "next year" - you only turn 40 once. You could check it out in 2017.

So, you don't think they'll do something for their anniversary next year, even though it won't be 40?

They didn't do something big for 39, 38, 37, etc

              Interesting...

So, do you know what they did this year?

They did publish a timeline. They are free for the taking next to the playing cards.

what do you mean "a timeline"?

A piece of paper printed with their history from day one until now.

      2. The Cheeseboard deserves credit. They predated most of the modern food businesses in that part of Berkeley (including Chez Panisse) that came by the 1980s to be collectively nicknamed a "gourmet ghetto."

I remember the Cheeseboard opening, and moving to Shattuck. (No one could forget the rich smells of a diverse cheese shop. :-) The "Pig by the tail" Charcuterie opened nearby, but did not last as long. On Shattuck, the Cheeseboard occupied a store front that had been an older traditional business (maybe the pharmacy that had maintained an old-fashioned soda fountain, but I'm not sure). Rarely mentioned in later writing about food in that part of Berkeley are the neighborhood food businesses that preceded the "gourmet ghetto" -- the old drugstore pharmacy for one and (on the other side of Vine and the other side of Shattuck) the "Pantry Shelf" deli for another. But the Cheeseboard stuck with it, delivered the goods, outlasted several other businesses, and introduced excellent baguettes to Berkeley (long before Acme and other firms emulated and expanded that role). A job well done.
