Where to buy sichuan pepper in the East Bay?

Mike May 4, 2006 05:53 PM

I've been reading a lot about this stuff, but have never tried it, and as someone who loves spicy foods and trying new things, I'd love to get ahold of some. I live in Walnut Creek, so anywhere in Contra Costa County is ideal, but I'd travel a bit to pick some up. Does 99 Ranch have any? I haven't been back there since I discovered I want this ingredient.

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I tried searching and didn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated!

Try Country Wide or Country Store Chinese market in Concord/Pacheco. These peppercorns are not spicy per se they have a numbing effect.

It's actually called Country Square Market, and it's at 510 Contra Costa Blvd., in Pleasant Hill. The boundaries do get a bit blurry around there. Very good market, comparable to Ranch 99. There is also a pretty good pho restaurant in the same center.
