If you're looking for serious traditional Japanese cutlery, like Aritsugu, then I do not believe anyone in the area has them. However, Korin in NYC has a wide selection.

I second the Korin recommendation.. I have purchased my fish and vegrtable knifes there and there is no better place to shop. They are very helpful and do not try to move you up to more expensive knifes than you need. If you are unfamiliar with using a sharpening stone (and you should buy one), they also have a very helpful video to teach you how to use one.

The place I'm thinking of may be this place:

La Cuisine - The Cook's Resource
      323 Cameron Street
      Alexandria, VA 22314
      703-836-4435

There's a place in Alexandria that specializes in knives/cutlery. Never been; can't think of the name. I think it's in or near Old Town and I think it was reviewed in the Washington Post at some point in the past year.

Sorry to not be more helpful. But it would be great if someone could tell us the name of the place :-)
