Vegetarian in Rome

spyturtle008 Nov 3, 2007 11:50 AM

Greetings all,

I'll be staying in Rome for a week beginning next Sunday, 11/11, at a hotel on St. Peter's Square. This is my first trip abroad and I'm looking forward to exploring as many great restaurants / eateries / markets as possible. My partner and I are vegetarian (no meat, no fish, no sea creatures -- we do eat dairy / eggs). I've gotten a few ideas so far from browsing older posts on this board, but would be very grateful for any updated suggestions you all might have.

Grazi!

I haven't actually tried any of the billed vegetarian restaurants, but there are a few on here that keep showing up- http://www.happycow.net/europe/italy/... (I'm thinking of saving http://www.tourome.com/vegetarian_men... for a last meal....scrumptious looking!) You should always be able to get vegetarian pasta, of some kind, but make sure that they know you don't do meat broth/pancetta/etc. Some times that requires careful explanations, depending on how serious you are. Also, make sure you're getting the purely vegetarian antipasti, not the mare version, unless you like finny things as a plate garnish! 'Gusto (surrounding the Mausoleum of Augustus) offers what appears to be an amazing vegetarian menu, although I can only vouch for their caffe (excellent). Clearly places like the traditional Roman places highlighting offal are probably not your best bet, but it's usually possible to cobble together something amazing at most places. And please report back!

We've had several meals at Margutta Vegetariana, on via Margutta, between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo. The food is very good and well prepared. Weekends and lunches they serve 'brunch' style with a huge variety of dishes, and they also have some very good desserts! The prices are reasonable, not inexpensive. We're not vegetarians but we both enjoyed the restaurant and recommend it highly.

I second Margutta Vegetariana. I had stuffed zucchini blossoms there a few years ago that I'm still dreaming about!

Treat your vegetarian taste buds to the melanzane parmigiana at Fiammetta between Piazza Navona & the Tiber, immed. around the corner from the Genio Hotel on Zandarelli....fabulous....none better.
Also indulge in the gnocchiette with fava beans, cherry tomatoes & truffles at Le Mani in Pasta, Via dei Genovesi 37 in Trastevere...incredible. Buon Appetito.

Please do yourself a great favor and find BIBLIOTHE near the Gesu church and Victor Emanual, sublime vegan food or vegetarian
