Other than the local supermarkets (Dominion, Loblaws, No Frills), where can I find some nice dried spices? I live in the east end of Toronto, but don't mind to drive. I'm looking in particular for garlic powder, chili powder etc. Costco sells them, but the size is way too big.

TIA!

House of spice is a good choice. Great selection, good prices. If you want something a little further east, Kohinoor Foods on Gerrard in Little India has a very good selection of dried spices.

For the Cadillac version of dried spices, which include spices that are extremely marginal and hard to find, the Spice Trader, on Queen West has an amazing selection of rarities in nice little presentation tins. You do pay for it, though for many the freshness makes it way above everything else.

..i agree with snarf, Spice Trader is good, though pricey, I pick a few faves (I'd recco their hot smoky paprika) and get them there and stock up on the rest at HofS..

Hi Snarf,
Thank you for your suggestion of Spice Trader. I was looking for organic spices (failed to mention in my original post). I actually went there (from uptown to downtown) on Sunday and was quite impressed. It was pricey, but the quality is good and fresh. I ended up spending $50 and came home to throw away all my old spices. I love the mini cans as well.

There's a dry goods store called "Lively Life Fine Foods" on the lower floor of the St. Lawrence Market, near the Rube's Rice kiosk. They have a great selection of dried spices at the back, in small packages, and the prices are pretty decent. If you're looking for a hard-to-find spice, or a less common variety of a more common spice (say Hungarian Paprika or Mexican Oregano) then the likelihood of finding it is better, too. Can't really comment on freshness, but everything I've bought there seemed to be fine.
