Best Vietnamese in Manhattan

My son is going to vietnam soon for a semester and I wanted to take him to try whatever passes for an authentic Vietnamese cuisine for a fun going away dinner. Ideas?

  1. we had a good time at safran the other night

    88 7th Ave, New York, NY 10011

    1. It won't compare to the food in Vietnam, but I've always been a fan of Nam Son, 245 Grand St. 212-966-6507

        1. We tried pho viet huong on 73 Mulberry Street.
There was a special green papaya salad with beef that was wonderful, fresh, crunchy and loads of cilantro. We also had a beef cube dish the waiter recommende dwhich was medium spicy and very good. Seemed like a good enough place, nice service at lunch time in the midst of chinatown, just don't know how authentic.

          1. For me either Nha Trang or Doyers in Chinatown unless you count Saigon Bakery for a banh mi.
