True Thai - Mpls - Tonight

Some friends and I are going to True Thai tonight. It's one of my favorite restaurants in town. I usually get the green curry or the red curry.

Can any of you recommend other good dishes there?

  1. I've been through about 1/3 of the menu, and have liked everything I tried. My favorites are:

Sweet Purple Yam appetizer - good for sharing (it's rich).

Vegetables with Roasted Tomato Dipping Sauce - a plate of plain steamed veggies, which sounds boring but isn't, plus a delicious spicy sauce (ask for extra sauce).
Green Papaya Salad - their version comes with tomatoes, green beans, and peanuts, and has a sweet, mostly clear sauce (that is, no murky Lao-style ingredients).

Laab - spiced ground meat with onions and cilantro, eaten in lettuce leaves.

Pineapple Curry - rich and creamy with coconut milk (my whole family loves this).

Wok-fried Garlic & Crushed Black Pepper with scallops - a bit exotic but very tasty (would be good with tofu, chicken, or beef, too).

    Have a nice dinner!

The pad see yew is great. It's like a Thai version of beef stew with noodles. Strong "comfort food" vibes.

I also like the appetizer which is basically Thai beef jerky with sticky rice. And the fried cashews! Put those together, and you've got a perfect sports bar snack.

I tried the fried cashews and was a little disappointed. They were good for what they were, but they were essentially just cashews lightly pan fried with salt. As much as I am underwhelmed by Chiang Mai Thai, their version of this dish is really good - the cashews are hot *and* spicy.
