Famous Dave's Saugus location closed
Drove by it yesterday and noticed the sign. I only had one meal there and it was so bad that I couldn't bear to even think about going back. For anyone who liked it, their Braintree location is apparently still open.
As I recall, the last restaurant to be housed there was Chevy's. Maybe the location is cursed!

I don't think it is the location. They just need to choose better restaurants.

Um, Scuba, I think the loss of a restaurant is nothing to be cheered.
The closing of Fat Dave's means loss of jobs, loss of local taxes for the town and a drain on the state's unemployment fund.
True, FD's received uniformly bad reviews (here and elsewhere) but a 'corporate' restaurant, done right, can be a good thing from a consumer point of view. Some notable examples include the Back Bay Restaurant Group's offerings (Abe & Louie's and Charley's are decent options); Todd English's empire (Olives and Figs); and the company behind Regina and Polcaris (despite their well-publicized problems with sexist pig managers, they are well received by the public.) If that location (or any other) is to house a restaurant, let's hope it's a concept that people will support. Every successful restaurant, even ones run by corporations, means good things for the community at large.

well then i hope that all the people displaced by this tragic developement that wish to persue a career in the food service industry do so in locally owned independent establishments that give added diversity and vibrance to what has become a corporate homogenized enviorment.

According to the Mass. Restaurant Association, there are over 13,000 eating and drinking establishments in Massachusetts. I'd find it hard to believe that a significant majority are not independent establishments. In our economy, there is plenty of room for every type of restaurant.
Regardless, your reply seems a quite sarcastic. Few may mourn the demise of FD, but that does not mean there is reason to cheer.

well i'm cheering. a crappy corporate chain restaurant that was serving crappy food folded. i'm putting this one in the win column. if you want to talk further, meet me at Uncle Pete's BBQ in Revere.

Sorry to hear it. A closing is certainly not a "win." I know too many people (independent and corporate) who've lost big time (house, credit rating, etc.) due to a closing.

I'm not surprised; I had take out from there once - everything tasted the same. What was there before Chevy's do you recall?

I think it was an Italian place. Marios maybe?

Ya it was Eastside Marios.

I notice there are several locations between Melrose and Peabody on Rt.1N & S that cannot sustain any kind of business for any length of time. And...they all seem to be restaurants. The changeover is alarming. Wonder what will go into Dave's. I never did get there.

lots of changes in Saugus. Hope they put something good in at FD's location. I ate at the other 2 places but never FD's based on reviews, overpriced and almost no choices for non-meat eaters. Love BBQ but not meat.. Looking forward to trying Midwest Grill and Angelas coal oven pizza across the street. Also other new Saugus spots that arent too bad for some things are Ironworks Grille and Bostonville Grille. Love Brothers Kouzina but thats further up Rt 1 Have been looking forward to the new Shops at Saugus but just discovered the new places and its quite disappointing. Not bad places but just nothing new. They will have Border Cafe, which is now across the street and Qdoba which is decent Mex fast food but already have that in Danvers and why 2 Mex in same plaza? otherwise I just hear Starbucks, Petsmart and Lazy Boy and Trader Joes. Same old same old. Natick seems to have recently gotten some Boston foodie places moving out there, why not to Saugus?

Sooooo.... with the new construction on Rt. 1 North - we're getting a Trader Joe's AND a Market Basket? I'm in heaven just anticipating.....But I do echo your wonder about Border and Qdoba!!

Oh my gosh, I'll gladly suffer a glut of chainmex if we get a Trader Joe's! Eeeeeeee, yay!

you love BBQ but not meat?....that makes no sense.
Natick is a completely different area. The high end shopping there will draw a much more affluent crowd. You cant compare the surrounding areas in Saugus to the surrounding areas in Natick its a completley different kind of clientle.
and hey Im originally from Revere so dont call me a snob

Sorry to hear you had a lousy experience. I went twice to the Saugus location and found it excellent. The brisket was the best I ever had - smoky tasting, tender and moist. Ditto for the ribs.
Maybe you don't like smoked meat?

maybe the OP just didn't like bad smoked meat..
nor did enough others like ir that the place closed down

Anyone know what this location is going to be now? I had meal there twice and it was pretty good. I happen to like Smokey Bones better. Where is the new Trader Joes opening?
