plagued by tipping - delivery

pinstripeprincess Nov 1, 2007 04:15 PM

so i sit here awaiting a delivery of food and it suddenly occured to me that i might've been going about this tipping thing all wrong. i do tip, that's not the issue... but who am i really tipping?

most of the time i pay for it via credit card and sign for it at the door. it's so convenient to write down a tip on the bill i have to sign anyway rather than give the delivery guy some cash i might not even have. but, who is really getting that tip?

considering it's a a credit card slip that goes right back to the resto, the delivery person may never see it and the resto will be taking the tip as their own. so must i always tip in cash to make sure he gets what's right? is there some tipping out system with regards to delivery that is unbeknownst to me?

I pretty much always give the delivery men cash.

I used to tip in cash, and then I asked a delivery guy. He told me that it didn't make a difference to him, and that tips actually were better when credit card customers write them in. So I just write them in now.

same here. DH is always concerned the delivery person won't get the tip too if put on the cc.

Waiters get tips charged to credit cards. Why wouldn't delivery drivers get their tips?

Very corrupt owners. It would be illegal to withhold tips.

I always tip in cash - 10% rounded up to the nearest dollar, but at least a couple of bucks if it's small order.

Yeah, with me it depends. I'll usually tip in cash, if I've GOT cash on me, which is getting less and less frequent. I do tend to tip higher when I put it on the card, interesting in light of brendastarlet's post above.

You would think the delivery guy would tell you he prefered a cash tip if the restaurant was stealing credit card tips.

Personally, it would never have crossed my mind to worry about whether the delivery guy was getting my tip when I charged it. I order from the same places often, and I've never had any delivery person complain to me of an issue with credit card tips.

                ask them!

delivery drivers aren't (in my experience) trained to give the "polite answer" like servers in restaurants. if you ask " do you get the tip if i write it in or should i give you cash?" they will most definitely give you an honest answer.

Delivery drivers are responsible for giving the total sales to the restaurant manager, same as servers. Everything over that they keep. They have the opportunity to take their tips from the cash they collected that shift and give the restaurant the rest.

That was my sense - I'm going to ask next time though, to see what response I get.
