Astoria street tamales, Broadway near 38th St.

Since I usually don't get off at Steinway at this time in the evening I'm not sure if this was just for Dia de los Muertos or if they're there other times, but there were a couple of women selling tamales and aroz con leche from insulated jugs on the south side of Broadway a block west of Steinway last night around 7:45pm.

The tamale was terrific: moist and creamy but not too soft, strewn with chunks of tender, fragrant pork and a kicky, not-too-tangy salsa verde. It was similar to, but fresher than, the tamales sold mornings at the Mexican grocery on the north side of the street between 45th and 46th. Wish I tried that arroz con leche. I know what I'm doing if I pass through around that time again today or tomorrow.

  1. If it's the same ladies they are randomly there. I usually see them set up in a doorway on the next block over between 37th and 38th.
