Italian Frozen Yogurt

Anyone know anything about the new Italian frozen yogurt place that's going in on Telegraph (Berkeley)? What the heck is "Italian" frozen yogurt anyway?

  1. I've been wondering about the same thing. So is it a mix between gelato and frozen yogurt? That sounds a bit weird though. Anyway, the store was supposed to open in the summer but they're still doing constructions right now.

    1. I actually work there, we just opened. Basically there's a technicality where to call it "frozen yogurt" it must be made in a factory and then shipped to the store. We make our frozen yogurt in the store from actual yogurt (rather than powder) and this yogurt is from Italy because it is the only kind that has the right flavor. It's not really an Italian tradition or anything, we just needed to call it something.

        Great! Thanks for the info. I'm intrigued. Can you tell us a little more about it... texture, sizes, flavors, toppings, prices, etc. Do they have a website?

          texture: creamy, but hard. it tastes really good when it's melted too.
          sizes: the mini is 6 oz, small is 8 oz, medium 12 oz and large 16 oz.
          flavors: currently we have original (plain yogurt flavor) and rotating flavors of the week, but i think we are planning on getting another machine and having 2 more flavors at a time.
          toppings: fruit toppings vary by season, right now we have mango, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, peaches, mandarin oranges, bananas, blueberries. dry toppings include mochi, granola, cereals, chocolate chips, sprinkles, oreos, m&ms, etc.
          prices: the mini of original is a 1.50, small is 2.50, medium is 3.50, large is 4.50. the flavor is 25 cents more, toppings are 50 cents each, or 3 for 1.25. so a mini original with toppings is 2.75.

            I had a small plain yogurt a few weeks ago and the texture was pretty icy and I didn't feel that there was enough tang to it. I also had a sample of the flavor of the week, which was strawberry. The flavor was okay but nothing extraordinary, and it was very icy as well. There was no seating in the store, only a high table.

            Personally for something similar around campus, I prefer Mangoberry at Michelle's Yogurt & Sweets on Durant and Telegraph. My favorite is still Sketch's Organic Straus Yogurt, but that's not really the same thing. Service at Ryno's was good though, and the girls working there gave me generous portions of both my sample and my cup of yogurt.

             
      2. I was walking by so tasted this the other day. The plain was very tangy, strong yogurt flavor, not very sweet. I love yogurt so to me this is a lot more appealing than the usual bland-tasting stuff. Had an unexpected but pleasant hint of walnut.

        I haven't had Pinkberry so can't say if it's anything like it.
