Where can I find some yummy, healthy vegetable soup to take away? I am looking for something nice and chunky with some real texture preferably with a veggie stock. I work in Santa Monica and I live in Silverlake so it can be from almost anywhere in the city.
First of all -- that's gotta be the worst commute! 2nd to the worst -- I lived in SM and worked at Disney, that sucked.
Okay, so glad you live in SL cause what I really like is the veg soup at the BACKDOOR BAKERY -- when I'm in need of comfort food, I get their grilled cheese (mix of cheddar & jack) with bacon and a cup of their veggie soup which is included as a side. The broth is flavorful and theirs big chunks of veggies.
Oh, also, almost forgot, the best veg soup in the world is... AL GELATO on Robertson. OMG! Get the bowl, comes with a yummy bread basket -- it's a humongous meal. Whenever I'm on that side of town, I stop in for it. Full disclosure, probably haven't stopped there in a while -- hopefully they still have it. The soup is thick and wonderful.
It's funny that you mention Backdoor because I used to work there and that was what I was thinking when I posted the original post but I wanted to see if there were any other great places I was missing. I used to take big containers of it home with me (and their yummy cream of mushroom).
Soup season is upon us and I am looking forward to nights in my PJs and slippers, sitting on my sofa with my dog at my feet, the fireplace roaring, my best friend TIVO and a bowl of steaming soup in my hands. Bliss.
I love the "Low-Fat Vegetarian Garden Vegetable Soup" at Panera Bread. Very nice and chunky and satisfying. I think they only have it Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays though. The soups are my favorite thing on the menu at Panera.
Sopa Fideo at Tere's on Melrose is truly excellent, though I am fairly certain its base is chicken stock, not veggie stock.
Earth, Wind and Flour on Wilshire Blvd. has the tastiest veggie soup(minestrone), their Boston pizza is just as yummy.
