Due to depleting salmon supplies in the Pacific Northwest just about all the wild salmon on the current market is from Alaska. The small supply of Alaskan salmon is bought up rapidly (mostly by restaurants) at astronomical prices. I would be skeptical of anyone was selling inexpensive salmon marked as "wild".

The strict limitations will put a shortage of commercially-caught salmon here.

However, this does not affect the sportfishermen so if you don't mind hopping on a party boat and catching them yourselves, go for it. If you catch your limit of two per person, it will definitely be cheaper than what you'll pay at the fish market.

The place I go to buy wild salmon in San Francisco right now is Yum Yum, on Irving in the Sunset. As others have said, it's not cheap anywhere, but Yum Yum had some beautiful looking king today for 20 a pound, which is cheaper than what I've seen at Bryan's (unless you're willing to buy frozen).

Also, the fish stand at the Thursday and Saturday Marin farmer's market in San Rafael (I think it's Mission Fresh Fish) had some wild salmon last week from Canada for less -- I think maybe 12 or 13 a pound.

Where are you? Monterrey Fish in Berkeley has wild line caught or net caught Alaskan King. It is usually around 19 dollars a pound. It is very delicious. It is very rich, and a pound and a half is enough for 4 healthy eaters. Last week they had ivory salmon, wild, not frozen, Alaskan. Their fish is never frozen as far as I know.

Every Alaskan I know (and I lived there for twenty years) prefers frozen wild to fresh farmed, which means that you have a lot of choices... I think even Trader Joe's carries it! Properly frozen (flash frozen, on ship) fish is generally more reliable than fresh fish, unless you're close to where it was caught, since it only takes one screw-up in the ship-to-kitchen-counter chain to lower the quality.
